"apne - our own A visual project dedicated to mixed-Panjabi/Punjabi identity. Panjab/Punjab, the land of five rivers, is a colourful community of different religions, states, cultures and histories. Panjabi/Punjabi are resilient, kind, and determined people’s. This visual project demonstrates how deep the Panjabi/Punjabi bounds go, some of them going as far to Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Northern Ireland. Cass is half Jamaican & half Punjabi (pink phulkari) Pearl is half Northern Irish & half Punjabi (navy blue phulkari) Anjali is half Trinidadian & Ugandan Sikh Punjabi (royal blue phulkari) All models Punjabi ancestry is tracked back to Jalandhar, Doaba. It was extremely important to have indo- Caribbean cultures & communities represented, since they often are excluded from the Desi & Punjabi diaspora. Indo-Caribbean communities were one of the first safe spaces for me when healing from colourism, and I consider them to be long lost sisters and brothers. For anyone who is not educated about Indo-Caribbean history and cultures, I heavily encourage you to do so. You’ll be shocked by the atrocities that they had to experience but definitely will admire their resiliency and strength. We are much stronger united than divided. Inspired by the poem “Apne” by Harman Kaur. Thank you to the team for all of their time and efforts. Selection for the team was extremely intentional and we felt honoured to represent your communities."
